Academic Advisor

The Department of Computer Science (CS) at The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for the position of Academic Advisor to advise current, incoming, and prospective undergraduate students (majors and minors) in the Department of Computer Science. Additionally, this position will be the main point of contact for communications with prospective students and also present department information at recruiting events (in-person and online).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Academic Advising:
    • Advise current and prospective undergraduate students, addressing their concerns and providing appropriate information.
    • Respond to student questions by email, online forum, and drop-in advising queue.
    • Follow up with students who may be struggling, making appropriate referrals to outside sources of help.
    • Liaise with instructors and outside offices (e.g. college advising) on behalf of students.
    • Advise new students during summer registration.
  • Student engagement, support, and outreach activities:
    • Meet with prospective students who visit the department.
    • Answer email questions from prospective students.
    • Present and answer questions at campus, college, and departmental undergraduate recruiting events.
    • Coordinate the student volunteers who assist at these events.
    • Coordinate with the partner departments for blended majors.
    • Work with the Grainger communications team to keep Computer Science recruiting materials up to date.
    • Help organize the department's fall welcome event for incoming undergraduates.
  • Advising Administration:
    • Monitor progress of students in the department's programs, identifying students who are struggling or enrolled in inappropriate schedules.
    • Help develop new and improved policies and procedures for the undergraduate program and the undergraduate advising office.
    • Keep student records up to date.
    • Add Banner and DARS overrides for individual students.
    • Provide documentation for students needing advisor verification.
  • Maintain familiarity with department, college, and university requirements and procedures for undergraduate academic programs.
  • Perform additional appropriate advising duties to further the mission of the department.
Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree

• At least two years of experience with higher education student services

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree
• Significant direct undergraduate student advising experience
• Significant recruiting or similar experience
• Experience presenting information to large audiences in a professional setting
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work with students from a wide range of backgrounds, with a wide range of needs
• Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as part of a team

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search closes. The minimum salary is $48,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Work authorization is not available for this position.
