Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Academic Programs will work closely with the Student Success and Academic Affairs team to advise, support, and develop programming for students that are high risk and in transition during their Gies college career; provide research and training to OUA Advising staff to help support students that are high risk.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Student Advising and Engagement • Design and administer specialized advising including the development of course planning, facilitating academic accommodations including outreach and counseling with each student. • Collaborates with faculty, other academic professionals, staff, and campus administrators • Counsels students on supports for academic and related personal matters. • Assists with student discipline issues, when appropriate • Provide academic advising and guidance regarding university, college, and department graduation requirements and academic policies • Provide advice regarding academic and career options • Refer students to appropriate academic, career, and student affairs support services • Monitor academic progress toward graduation using the appropriate systems; identify and reach out to advisees to support successful academic progress • Thoroughly document all student contacts using the advising portal system • Provide summer registration advising and assistance to new first-year and transfer students • Articulate study abroad courses for undergraduate students • Coordinate programs and events related to major and career exploration, academic success skills, and student transition, and other relevant areas • Host Express Advising shift and help monitor Undergraduate Email account ass assigned • Support Office of Undergraduate Affairs initiatives and programs as assigned
  • Undergraduate Advising Program Development
    • Oversee and execute academic advising programming for the Four-Year Advising model: Summer New Student Registration, Spring Semester Planning, Major Exploration, and Graduation Planning
    • Supervision of Undergraduate Summer Gies Guides
    • Oversight of Peer Advising Program
    • Supervision of Peer Advisors
    • Development and Teaching BUS 199 - training course for Peer Advisors
    • Develop and maintain Undergraduate Advising Handbook
    • Supervise the Advising Graduate Summer Intern
  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education: Bachelor's degree Experience: At least three years of professional with student advising or student educational experience

    Preferred Qualifications
    Master's degree


    Experience working directly with undergraduate students in higher education, particularly with students categorized as high risk.
    Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate student education and ability to respond to undergraduate students' needs and concerns.
    Experience with transition programming
    Experience supervising student employees
    Experience advising undergraduate students

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Exceptional communication skills, strong organizational and planning skills, and the ability to build relationships and collaborate with colleagues within and outside of the unit.
  • Appointment Information
    This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 3/16/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
