Summary of the group:

In Purification Process Sciences in Gaithersburg, MD you'll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients' lives. We're constantly pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients, with a passion for discovery and a pipeline to show for it. We're pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas including oncology, respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and infection and vaccines. Main Duties & Responsibilities:

The position resides in the Critical Pipeline Reagent Sciences Group (CPRS) contained within the Purification Process Sciences R&D department. Members of the CPRS function work closely with the research scientists and process development scientists to generate pipeline supporting molecules. Position may require weekend work and/or periodic late-nights. Main duties are as follows:

  • Generation of biopharmaceutical reagents to advance the R&D AstraZeneca pipeline
  • Performing purifications for complex biopharmaceutical drugs such as antibodies, bispecific antibodies, fusion proteins, DuetMabs, pDNA, and viruses
  • Performing conjugations of candidate drugs and anti-IDs to support PK/PD studies
  • Solving challenging protein purification problems
  • Performs technology development projects to increase purification efficiency
  • Coordinating closely with the research department, cell culture group, and analytical biotechnology group in order to meet project timelines and company goals
  • Analyzing and interpreting analytical and process data
  • Maintain accurate records of data and actively participate in laboratory organization
  • Professionally deliver results to internal and external audiences
  • Supervision: Should be able to function with limited supervision and is expected to work independently on a day-to-day basis. Expectation for independence will increase with time and experience in the position.

Relevant Education & Experience:

BS/BA or MS/MA biology, biochemistry, chemical/biochemical engineering, or related field

Scientist:
  • Education: M.S. or B.S. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutics, Chemical/biochemical Engineering or related field
  • Experience: BS with 0+ years or MS with 0+ years in biopharmaceutical industry/Academic lab

Required Skills:
  • Highly team-oriented, energetic, critical thinker, organized, capable of multitasking with excellent oral and written skills
  • Knowledge of
    • Basic Protein Chemistry
    • Protein Chromatography
    • Purification Process Design for Monoclonal Antibodies and Novel Proteins
    • Basic Analytical Techniques (HPLC and SDS-PAGE Analyses)
    • Protein Modification by Conjugation
    • Statistics Software and DOE Analysis

Desired Skills:
  • GLP/GMP experience
  • Experience with purification process design
  • Troubleshoot and collaboratively resolve complex problems under tight time constraints
  • Experience performing protein chromatography using Akta/Akta software
  • Experience performing analytical testing
