SUMMARY

The Audio Engineer provides audio engineering support for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Tom Harkin Global Communications Center (GCC). The primary focus of this position is to organize, produce and ensure file quality and conversion for audio created as part of live or pre-recorded segments, which includes audio / video podcasts, public service announcements, live media uplinks and field audio. This position may involve travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Organizes, produces and ensures file quality and conversion for audio created as part of live or pre-recorded segments to include audio and video podcasts, public service announcements, live media uplinks, and field audio.

Captures, edits, and produces sound elements for www.cdc.org.

Works closely with director and others to determine creative direction on all assigned deliverables. Assists in selecting music and sound effects for live productions.

Utilizes audio equipment to record, synchronize, and mix music, voices, and sound effects. Operates a digital audio workstation (DAWS) for audio / video sweetening, editing, and audio-only productions.

Works closely with the Floor Director on placement of microphones. Calibrates all audio sources going through the audio mixing board, and properly adjusts levels during tapings.

Tests and resolves equipment issues prior to event or function. Monitors sound feeds to ensure superior quality in performance of all audio functions.

Provides functional guidance in the completion of a wide range of sound engineering tasks.

Stays up-to-date on industry advancements and changes in audio technology and best practices. Continually reviews and improves techniques, and makes feasible recommendations.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Audio Production or a related field of study and a minimum of two (2) years' relevant audio engineering experience; or equivalent combination of education / training / experience (i.e., High School Diploma or GED and six (6) years' audio engineering experience).

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

Certified Audio Engineer or similar certification helpful but not required

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Operational knowledge and skill in the standard tools, concepts, practices and procedures of audio engineering

Skilled proficiency in operating DAW systems and related audio equipment

Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Windows operating systems and software such as Pro Tools

Solid analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the needs and requirements of each project

Detail-oriented with effective organization skills

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced, changing environment

Excellent troubleshooting skills with ability to determine the cause of equipment malfunctions and to make necessary repairs / adjustments

Proven ability to work effectively and positively with other professional staff in a highly collaborative environment

Ability to work independently and in a team environment towards the successful achievement of goals

Ability to travel, as needed

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May be exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration. May work in high, precarious places. Exposed to general office noise with computers, printers and light traffic. May be required to hear with the use of headphones.
