POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Quality Director for Ophthalmology and an Investigator in Computational Vision Science, the biostatistician/data analyst will be responsible for cleaning many clinical data sets/databases including the IRIS database, the MGB Research Patient Data Registry (RPDR) and the MGB Enterprise Date Warehouse (EDW), configuring them for analysis, doing primary level analysis and contributing to the methods and results sections of publications.

BACKGROUND:Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary has recently been granted access, as part of a national application process, to the IRIS Registry database. This is a national ophthalmology database with approximately 25 million patients and 150 million visits that can be accessed for research purposes. It is the largest subspecialty database in the US. This project will answer diverse questions within ophthalmic sub-specialties, with a focus on rare medical and surgical outcomes. The project team is led by the Chair of Ophthalmology and the Quality Director. The clinical team consists of various ophthalmologists of different subspecialties, some with experience in big data and natural language processing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for initial cleaning of database
  • Primary level analysis for projects such as those below
  • Communicate with clinical investigators to determine appropriate statistical analyses and discuss results
  • Contribution to methods and results sections for publications using these data.


  • Qualifications
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    • Masters or PhD level Programmer (R experience preferred) with data management and analysis experience required.
    • Candidate should be comfortable with epidemiological study design.
    • 2-3 years of post-grad working experience preferred but recent graduates with research project experience eligible to apply.
    • Background with big data beneficial but not required.
    • Background with writing an academic paper for publication preferred.
    • Excellent communication (oral and writing) skills
    • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain detailed records of study data
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
