The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) seeks a dynamic, distinguished executive to serve as its next Chief Operating Officer (COO). As a member of the senior leadership team of University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, the COO, UIHC is responsible for ensuring that UIHC achieves the highest levels of quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and financial performance through a commitment to operational efficiency across the entire patient care platform. The COO, UIHC has responsibility for working with other senior leaders to manage UIHC operations across inpatient, outpatient, and surgical settings.

POSITION SUMMARY

The COO, UIHC has responsibility for all main campus operations across the inpatient, outpatient, and surgical environments. The COO, UIHC partners with the Chief Nursing Executive and Chief Medical Officer to ensure that the clinical platform achieves high levels of operational efficiency, quality outcomes, and patient satisfaction while promoting employee engagement. The COO, UIHC also has responsibility for overseeing all UIHC Capital Management

Reporting Relationships

  • The Chief Operating Officer reports to the Chief Executive Officer, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

    • Chief Administrative Officer of the Stead Family Children's Hospital
Key Working Relationships
  • Work as a member of the senior leadership team of UI Hospitals & Clinics and partner in the management of the patient care enterprise.
  • Work collaboratively with the Vice President for Medical Affairs (VPMA) and the Office of the VPMA to accomplish the tripartite mission of UI Health Care.
  • Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, the COO will be responsible for supporting the goals and objectives of the entire UI Health Care Enterprise.

Selected Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work in partnership with Carver College Chairs to lead the surgical services platform across all sites and settings.
  • Work in partnership with CNE and CMO to lead the main campus inpatient operations.
  • Work in partnership with CCOM Chairs/Departmental Executive Officers to lead the main campus ambulatory operations.
  • Ensure optimal resource utilization and resource efficiency across the clinical platform while achieving optimal clinical and financial outcomes.
  • Lead enterprise efforts to maximize throughput and efficiency across the clinical platform, including efforts to improve inpatient length of stay, and optimal resource utilization in our surgical and ambulatory settings.
  • Lead and manage clinical ancillary services, support services and supply chain management services to achieve high levels of operational and financial efficiency while providing high levels of support to enterprise customers.
  • Lead and manage emergency management and preparedness activities across the enterprise to achieve high levels of emergency preparedness.
  • Work in partnership with UIHC leadership to develop and deliver a high-quality capital management program that ensures the highest levels of patient safety and supports the organization's growth strategies.
  • Lead efforts to ensure the quality and patient safety of services in the surgical services and main campus ambulatory areas.
  • Lead efforts to improve the operational efficiency and patient satisfaction of the surgical services and main campus ambulatory areas.
  • Partner with the Chief Nurse Executive and Chief Medical Officer to develop and implement a tired huddle communication system across the enterprise.
  • Partner with Chief Medical Officer, UIHC to ensure high quality, optimal throughput and efficiency within the UIHC inpatient enterprise.
  • Partner with Chief Nurse Executive, UIHC to ensure highest levels of patient satisfaction and employee engagement across the clinical platform.
  • Partner with Chief Growth Officer, UIHC to ensure that investments within strategic growth priorities are aligned with operational plans to execute clinical efficiencies across service lines.
  • Partner with Chief Financial Officer, UIHC to ensure optimal revenue cycle productivity and financial efficiency across the enterprise platform.
  • Partner with Vice Dean, Clinical Affairs, CCOM, to develop high quality faculty programs for the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and develop initiatives to improve the productivity and effectiveness of our faculty practices.
  • Partner with Chief Compliance Officer, UIHC to ensure compliance with accreditation standards, all applicable hospital and university policies and procedures, and with Joint Commission and other regulatory organization guidelines.
  • Partner with Chief Human Resources Officer, UIHC to recruit and retain the highest quality workforce, continue to develop the organization and the people within it, and administer a fair and equitable workplace.
  • Partner with Chief Information Officer, UIHC to use information technology appropriately to advance the patient care mission of UIHC through appropriate initiative prioritization and operational partnership to maximize the value of information technology.
  • Lead the Clinical Systems Surgical Services Sub-Committee, as well as support the work of the Clinical Staff Affairs and Clinical Operations Sub-Committee to ensure that there is appropriate partnership with the medical staff on operational improvement efforts.
  • Support the UI Health Care Enterprise Committee and relevant governance groups in developing strong clinical programs and creating enterprise partnerships to drive UIHC Clinical Strategy.
  • Partner with AVP, Marketing & Communications to increase the visibility of operational improvement, clinical efficiency, and clinical transformation to improve the patient experience.
  • Partner with AVP, External Relations to develop key external relationships as appropriate within the community and with political, legislative, and regulatory bodies and provide representation to key community advocacy groups and city, county, state, and national organizations.
  • Represent the UIHC interests on various campus committees.
Basic Function and Responsibility for all Health Care Services Executives

This executive will direct and be continuously responsible for the overall administration and provision of services, programs, and staff functions for major focus areas within the Health Care facility, including fiscal, legal, and patient care; undertake/direct major project and planning assignments; and support the CEO in administration of UIHC.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications include:

Education / Knowledge/ Experience:
  • A graduate degree or the equivalent in healthcare administration, business, or a related discipline.
  • Proven business, financial, and planning skills.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressive management experience in healthcare operations.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in successful healthcare business/program development.
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with nurses, physicians, ancillary personnel, and administrators.
  • Experience in the development and evaluation of clinical programs.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to managing in a transparent environment as well as understanding of complexities of managing in a public institution.
Desired qualities and qualifications include:
  • Experience in an academic medical center or complex teaching hospital.
  • Effective collaborator and experience working across a matrix environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the delivery of high-quality patient care.
  • Effectiveness in assembling and leading teams.
  • Experience with benchmarking and using data effectively for operational decision-making.
  • Experience in human resource management, staff development and administrative leadership.
  • Experienced in a unionized environment.
  • Experience in capital management, facilities management, and hospital construction projects.
