Job Summary
The Program in Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an Instructor/Lecturer/Teaching Assistant Professor position to teach 1st and 2nd year courses in Hebrew, develop the Hebrew curriculum (in consultation with program faculty), design/administer placement and proficiency tests, promote the program and Hebrew classes, train/supervise any Teaching Assistants or instructors teaching any sections of 1st or 2nd year Hebrew, and support the instructional needs of the Hebrew program.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Master's degree (Instructor) or a Ph.D. (Lecturer or Teaching Assistant Professor) in Hebrew, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Middle Eastern Studies, or a related field.
Preference will be given to candidates who have advanced graduate work in Hebrew and/or a closely related field, have a record of effective language teaching at the college level, or have a demonstrated record of teaching and curricular/program development in a non-college setting.
Preference will be given to candidates who show evidence of teaching effectiveness as well as the ability to design an effective, proficiency-based two-year language sequence and to train/supervise instructors with little or no previous teaching experience. The successful candidate should be able to offer proficiency-based language instruction and demonstrate professional level proficiency in Hebrew and English.
Candidates who have a Ph.D. completed by time of appointment, have a minimum of 1 year experience in university undergraduate teaching, show excellent promise of establishing a research program that complements their teaching role and would like research expectations to be part of their position will be considered for the Teaching Assistant Professor position. Candidates for the Teaching Professorial level must have demonstrated experience to make an instructional and curricular impact both within the department and beyond, either through scholarly publications, invited talks, or other related activities involving their discipline, pedagogy, and student interactions.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time non-tenure track position, appointed on a 9-month basis. The expected start date is Aug 16, 2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
