Position Summary:

The Dean of the School of Education and Health Sciences (SEHS) is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, reviewing, and administering all of the programs in the School and for ensuring the maintenance of all accreditations. The Dean serves as the primary advocate and liaison for the School faculty in matters of curriculum, policy, program development, and resource allocation. The Dean will also be expected to maintain and strengthen the relationships with our community partners, in particular, local and regional health and fitness organizations, and school districts. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Description of Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide visionary academic and administrative leadership and direction for the School.
  • Lead the timely and strategic development of new graduate programs in health, wellness, and education, as well as programs for traditional undergraduate and post-traditional students.
  • Build strong collaborations with internal and external constituents: faculty, current students, and the local and regional health and wellness and K-12 school communities.
  • Lead the development and implementation of successful advanced clinical practice programs at the master's and/or doctoral levels.
  • Develop and maintain significant strategic partnerships with community healthcare organizations and providers to support the clinical needs of our programs.
  • Promote the School's programs and actively assist in the recruitment of highly qualified students and faculty.
  • Supervise department chairs.
  • Coordinate efforts to maintain the School's compliance and accreditation standards.
  • Support the acquisition of resources through fundraising and grants.
  • Ensure compliance with the conditions for grants currently in process.
  • Enhance the School's presence locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Serve on the Provost's Council, Provost's Leadership Team, President's Council, and other college academic committees as needed.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the pursuit of new external accreditations, such as CAEP.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Exceptionally strong communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal) and the ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport at all levels of the College in order to collaborate effectively and build partnerships inside and outside of the college.
  • Successful experience in or demonstrated capacity for fundraising.
  • Ability to effectively make presentations to internal and external constituents.
  • Skills and experience in strategic planning, fiscal planning, and resource management.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing diverse teams and in championing diversity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.
  • Demonstrated experience with grant administration highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated organization and planning skills (strategic, short- and long-term); strong follow-up and follow-through skills to ensure completion of strategic plans, goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a flexible, energetic, creative, and results-oriented leadership style that promotes trust, autonomy, and accountability.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Dean serves as the chief academic officer for the School of Education and Health Sciences and assumes responsibility for strategic leadership and operational management. Reporting directly to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, they have responsibility for faculty recruitment, professional development, and evaluation; fundraising and external community outreach in support of the Office of Institutional Advancement; program and curriculum development and assessment; key enrollment goals in support of the Office of Enrollment Management; persistence and timely graduation initiatives at the School of Education and Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Center for Student Success; budget management and resource allocation; strategic planning; and maintenance of regional, state, and national accreditations, as appropriate. The Dean will foster a collegial environment that contributes to learning, scholarship and community in the School of Education and Health Sciences. As a member of the academic leadership team, the dean will also participate in strategic decision-making and foster partnerships and cross-school/college working relationships in support of College-wide academic programs, governance, and other North Central College initiatives.


Education/Training:

  • Credentials to teach at North Central College.
  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree in a health and wellness, healthcare, or education field.
  • A record of successful teaching and scholarship that would qualify candidate at the rank of full professor with tenure.

Experience:

  • Candidates must hold the rank of associate or full professor and have prior administrative experience at the level of department chair or higher.
  • Experience developing and implementing successful health and wellness programs at the master's and doctoral levels highly desired.
  • Experience administering programs with external accreditation and successfully leading programs through the accreditation process.
