Job Summary

IU South Bend is seeking a Director of Communications and Marketing, a senior leader within the division of University Relations and Advancement. The Director of Communications & Marketing is responsible for the development and implementation of data-driven marketing strategies that increase student enrollment and retention on the IU South Bend campus and increase IU South Bend's visibility in the community. This position serves as the chief spokesperson for the IU South Bend campus.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversees staff of 5 performing duties such as graphic design and brand management, digital marketing and social media, copy writing, photography and video. Responsible for most internal and external communications and reputation building activities for largest regional campus within the Indiana University system, utilizing inclusive and diverse messaging wherever possible.
  • Works closely with academic affairs for enrollment management and recruitment efforts.
  • Works closely with IU communications and marketing team for university-wide projects and activities.
  • Works closely with office of the Chancellor for a variety of ongoing projects and activities including writing and guidance of internal campus communications.
  • Chairs the communications and marketing council.
  • Oversees the publication of two annual magazines, annual report and other promotions.
  • Oversees the production of promotional videos for various campus and social media purposes.
  • Writes and distributes of press releases and media alerts to highlight campus events and accomplishments.
  • Leads all reporting efforts for communications and marketing activities
  • Serves as chief spokesperson for the IU South Bend campus and point of contact for the media.

General Responsibilities
  • Directs operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department, large multi-faceted department, or multiple departments.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, sets goals and objectives, determines staffing needs, and directs the work of a team of Communications Generalists and/or Communications Assistants.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and manages processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives.
  • Reviews drafts of communications and projects and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department and university.
  • Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
  • Assists in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs.
  • Monitors industry trends and best practices, makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager, and assists in implementing recommendations to optimize operations and progress toward objectives.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Leaders.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 4 years in relevant field
  • 1 year of management experience in relevant field
Preferred
  • 7 years in a relevant field
  • 5 years of management experience in a relevant field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. $80,000 - $85,000 annually
