Job Description
Under supervision of the Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services for Clinical Practice and Professional Development, provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a program of research and evidence-based practice in collaboration with nurses and other health care providers.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Acts as a liaison between UMB School of Nursing and UMMS to facilitate research and evidence-based practice and leads the research team of UMNursing with the Associate Dean for Research.

2. Provides collaborative opportunities for UMMS nurses and SON faculty and students to participate in interesting and innovative research and evidence-based practice projects that build on their respective expertise.

3. Provides expertise and guidance to UMMS (system level) stakeholders regarding nursing involvement in clinical research and inquiry as well as research regulatory requirements.

4. Provides expertise and guidance to UMMS (system level) stakeholders regarding nursing involvement in development of system policies and processes to support nursing inquiry and research at the Medical System level

5. Provides opportunities for research collaboration with other disciplines.

6. Represents UMMC Nursing and Patient Care Services on UMMS Research Committee to ensure that nursing research adheres to UMMS policies and standards.

7. Ensures the use of UMMC Nursing and Patient Care Services resources for clinical research are appropriate and feasible through representation on UMMC Research Review Committee and develops and implements policies to ensure appropriate review and approval of resources.

8. Serves as the advisor/mentor to the Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council and Midtown Campus Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Subgroup.

9. Chairs the UMMS Nursing & Patient Care Services Research Council and provides collaborative opportunities for nursing research across UMMS.

10. Implements strategies to sustain a culture of nursing inquiry.

11. Leads a team of nurse scientists across UMMC to identify research priorities and opportunities in alignment with UMMS strategic goals and ensures nurse scientists are integrated into internal and external existing research communities.

12. Collaborates with Manager of New Graduate Nurse Residency Program & Nursing Retention to oversee and provide structure, education, and mentorship for new graduate evidence-based practice projects.

13. Mentors nurses to identify patient care problems and processes and then guides staff to pursue the appropriate form of nursing inquiry.

14. Establishes and maintains a mechanism to review research proposals to assure scientific merit and protection of human subjects.

15. Oversees research compliance for UMMC nursing and patient care services research and provides education and resources for nursing and patient care services Principal Investigators to ensure compliance with good clinical practice for research.

16. Mentors nurses in the design, implementation, and dissemination of research.

17. Develops opportunities to enhance the visibility of clinical nurse achievements in nursing research and evidence-based practice projects at the local and regional level.

18. Mentors nurses and PCS staff in the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and oral/poster presentations for internal and external dissemination.

19. Contributes to internal publications and develops creative strategies to disseminate research to nursing staff.

20. Identifies learning needs of nurses regarding research and evidence-based practice.

21. Plans and implements innovative programs to meet the learning needs of nurses about research and evidence-based practice.

22. In collaboration with the Department of Safety and Quality, provides analysis and interpretation of outcomes data for department and organizational leadership.

23. Disseminates information regarding grant opportunities, requests for proposals, and calls for abstracts.

24. Mentors nurses in the development of grant proposals, acquisition of grant funds and administration of grant funds that support research and evidence-based practice initiatives.

25. Manages and advises on study budgets and the distribution of UMMC intramural research funds.

26. Develops and maintains a personal program of research.

27. Support research and evidence terminational pure appropriate through representation on UMMC Research Review Committee.t care spreads transdisciplinary teams through the evidence-based practice process, from question development through translation and outcomes management.

28. Incorporates research and evidence-based project findings into practice, policies, and clinical decision-making.

29. Mentors nurses in measurement of processes and outcomes of evidence-based clinical decisions.

30. Makes scholarly presentations at regional and national levels.

31. Participates in regional and national nursing research organizations

32. Responsible for ensuring UMMC meets Magnet standards related to nursing research and evidence-based practice.

33. Develops and implements an operations budget with management approval.

34. Provides strategic and operational oversight for the nursing inquiry program of nurse scientists, project specialist and data analyst. Recruits, selects, and orients employees. Ensures staff competency verification, professional development, and recognition.

35. Assists with the creation of effective performance management systems which provide clear expectations to staff in all roles, support staff participation in peer feedback and effectively address individual and group performance outcomes. Conducts performance reviews, and performance management on direct report staff. Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) from an accredited college or university in Nursing or Healthcare field is required. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact State agreements outlined through the Maryland Board of Nursing, is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of hospital experience is required; nursing experience preferred.
  • Eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Clinical and professional knowledge regarding current issues affecting healthcare delivery, quality management and professional practice is required. Knowledge regarding group dynamics, organizational change, and methodologies for affecting change through leadership are required.
  • Ability to independently develop and manage organizational level projects. Ability to plan, organize and follow through on projects.
  • Expertise in design, implementation, and evaluation of clinical research in nursing practice.
  • Demonstrated success in a leadership role exhibiting teaching, coaching and development skills. Demonstrated effectiveness in a consultative role at the organizational level.
  • Demonstrated success in scholarly presentations and publishing research results in peer reviewed scholarly journals.
  • Knowledge of clinical nursing research design, methods, database management and data analysis using statistical software packages is required
  • Expertise in the evidence-based practice process and demonstrated proficiency in evidence-based practice competencies for practicing registered nurses.
Patient Safety
  • Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
