The role will be responsible for the following:

The Director of the Sonography Program is responsible for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Chattanooga State Community College. The Director will lead, supervise, manage, and implement all aspects of the program, including classroom and online course development and instruction, curriculum development, marketing, recruitment and advising of students, budgeting, and faculty supervision and support, and revision/modification of all program components as needed. Position includes teaching responsibilities, including clinical practicum and capstone courses.

The Program Director holds a 12-month faculty position and reports to the Dean of Nursing & Allied Health. This position is responsible for delivering quality instruction using integrative technologies.

Essential Functions:

Fiscal Stewardship

  • Submit and revise a cost-effective annual budget for clinical travel assignments and other student-directed functions.
  • Direct, supervise, manage, and implement the overall operation of the program and its budget.
  • Monitor and analyze data pertinent to students' successful academic performance and ensure completion of ChSCC's Academic Program Review for Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.

Teaching Excellence and Program Innovation

  • Participate in the development, revision, and implementation of curriculum and course offerings.
  • Oversee the selection and training of clinical instructors/preceptors involved in the general and cardiovascular sonography segments of the program.
  • Evaluate and ensure the effectiveness of clinical experiences for the concentration(s) in which students are enrolled, to include, but not limited to, assuring clinical instructors have the appropriate credentials and there is an appropriate ratio of sonographers to students at each clinical site.
  • Evaluate student performance within the classroom, laboratory and clinical environments.
  • Promote, support and participate in student retention, and other program and student outcome efforts.
  • Complete and update program documentation for program operations and accreditation purposes, as necessary and/or as requested by the program director, according to the program's master plan and the College and program strategic plans.

Instruction Specific Activities

  • Instruct students in the didactic, laboratory, and clinical environments within assigned courses.
  • Facilitate adjunct laboratory or clinical faculty (or new adjunct faculty with associated responsibilities to your own) with organization of classroom and clinical duties.
  • Network with industry personnel to assist in promotion of the college and its programs and the securing of guest speakers and adjunct faculty.
  • Update and periodically review clinic manuals (usually every other week when students are in class session, and whenever visiting students within the clinical setting) for competency progression and accurate records.
  • Maintain personal schedule of classroom and office hours, and travel schedule to clinic, for self and other faculty involved in clinical instruction within the sonography program.

Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices

  • Maintain constructive communication with the faculty, advisory members and dean to provide necessary information for program continuity and effectiveness.
  • Assure representation of the College with external community partners (e.g., business, industry, and other higher educational institutions).
  • Support a culture of innovation and input that encourages professional development and stakeholder input and provides opportunities for growth within imaging technology.
  • Participate in personal professional development opportunities, staying up-to-date on best practices in both sonography and skills-based education.

Holistic Student Support

  • Serve as a respected professional role model for sonography students and graduates.
  • Collaborate with faculty, deans, and other administrators to meet the holistic needs of our students towards ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Advise applicants and program students on academic and career goals to assist them in developing plans for program entry, retention, graduation, and/or job placement.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, orientation and evaluation of program applicants and new students.
  • Prepare students for clinical entry with completion of all onboarding requirements, and thereafter monitor to assure maintenance of all credentials and requirements throughout the program year.

Position Requirements:

  • Preferred to have a minimum of a Master's degree in a related field, from a regionally accredited institution
  • Must minimally possess the appropriate credential(s) specific to the concentration(s) offered; (e.g., Adult Echocardiography and Vascular Technology), in addition to at least one other required credential in general sonography (Abdomen or Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Minimum of two years demonstrated full-time clinical experience as a registered sonographer.
  • Must document and maintain active CPR certification acceptable background check, all necessary educational transcripts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have the ability to collect information, perform analysis, and recommend solutions.
  • Must possess a general knowledge of operation and organizational structures of a community college environment; instructional standards, curriculum and accreditation requirements; computer software skills; file management and reporting systems.
  • Must demonstrate instructional and scanning competence.
