The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Associate will provide leadership and manage all aspects of Environmental Health &Safety for West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech).

- Wellness programs
- Assist in the development and implementation of various occupational safety and health programs. Continually review programs to ensure effectiveness and continual improvement.
- Document employee training and ensure timely training and updates occur.
- Set up weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly trainings for Facilities staff, UPD, OIT and others that may need safety and other OSHA training on campus
- Provide support and assistance for biosafety and blood borne pathogen programs and training.
- Provide support and assistance to the Industrial Hygiene, Hazardous Materials, Laboratory Safety, Biological Safety, Fire/Life Safety, Construction/Renovation and all other Occupational Safety and Health related programs.
- Form and Chair the WVU Tech Safety committee.
- Assist in developing and conducting educational and informational programs that enhance employee health and safety, property preservation and protection of the environment.
- Responsible to ensure safety and chemical records are maintained and updated.
- Responsible for ensuring the asbestos database is maintained and updated.
- Responsible for collecting asbestos samples for analysis.
- Assist in the investigation of injuries and illness and make recommendations for prevention. Follow-up on incidents to ensure effective corrective action is in place
- Support and assist with management of accident and injury logs as well as support of workers compensation program.
- Assist with the collecting, distributing and analyzing injury and illness data.
- Responsible for ensuring monitoring equipment is calibrated and maintained.
- Responsible for inspection of emergency eye wash and shower units across campus.
- Responsible for inspection and testing of lab fume hoods.
- Uphold the values and standards of WVU and Environmental, Health and Safety.
- Respond effectively to various incidents, emergencies, indoor air quality complaints and building issues as needed.
- Conduct industrial hygiene monitoring, response reports and recommendations as needed. Respond to indoor air quality concerns.
- Assist with fire and life safety program according to federal and state regulations.
- Respond to inquiries, supports clients with implementations of multi-disciplinary (laboratory, biosafety, industrial/hygiene occupational health and safety) programs through a service program of plans review, inspections, training, and technical assistance.
- Prepare written and verbal reports, conducts investigations and special projects.
- Responsible for monitoring occupational, chemical, and biological safety conditions in campus facilities by performing periodic physical surveys, inspections and reviews.
- Identify unsafe conditions and hazardous situations in work environments, including laboratories; provide recommendations for mitigation, communication improvement needs and follow-up to ensure corrective action has occurred.
- Take action where imminent dangers to life, health, or property are involved.
- Interact with various institutional staff, administrative offices, researchers, service providers and regulatory agencies as required.
- Assist with hazardous waste and biological waste management programs.
- Available to respond to institutional emergencies on a 24-hour basis, as needed. Response may require participation in remedial or containment efforts.
- Assist in campus stormwater and compliance, as well as, other environmental regulatory issues.
- Assist with food safety, sanitary, potable water safety and any other public health issues on campus.
- Assist in building water and mold intrusions.
- Visit Morgantown campus frequently to get additional training or gather resources necessary for training in Beckley
- Manage inspections and correction information with regard to insurance, regulatory agencies and contractors such as; BRIM, Fire Marshal, boiler inspections, fire control systems and fire extinguisher, fume hood, eye wash and emergency showers, etc.
- Frequently tour buildings, parking lots and grounds on campus, identify areas of improvement, ceilings tiles, flooring, paint and put in work orders to have items repaired or replaced.
- Within the first year of hiring, go through the necessary asbestos training to be able to remove low quantities of asbestos that may be needed in order for Facilities to complete maintenance work.
- Attend conferences, professional development and training as needed and recommended by supervision
- Assist in assigning and closing work orders
- Work with asset management on any asset tags and tracking of equipment
- Assists in preparing bid packages; reviews agreements and proposals; and monitors contract requirements.
- Research, evaluate and benchmark best practices in facilities planning and utilization of campus space.
- Research and provide professional development opportunities for staff
- Perform other duties and ad hoc tasks as required
- Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management or related field or equivalent experience is required.
- Master's degree in one of the above areas is preferred.
- At least 2 years of directly related professional experience in environmental health and safety programs including fire and life safety, laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, hazardous materials, biological safety and/or occupational safety.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written format.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize a computer and software.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret federal, state, and local health and safety regulation and communicate quantitative and qualitative information.
- Demonstrated ability to use, interpret and apply appropriate regulations to the University environment.

- Demonstrated ability to complete assigned tasks frequently in a very limited time frame.

- Valid driver's license - Incumbent must drive throughout the state and beyond to perform assigned tasks.
- Must have, or obtain, a minimum of a WV Asbestos Inspector's License within one year. Annual refresher is required.
- Must have, or obtain, a minimum of Hazardous Materials Awareness level training within one year. Annual refresher is required.
- Within year one, need to complete asbestos training to be able to remove small amounts of asbestos on campus.
- National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) ICS-100 and IS-700 certification required within one year in order to respond to emergency situations in an effective capacity.
