We are seeking a Virologist or Viral Immunologist with a background in discovery and early clinical trial product development to join the Early Vaccines & Immune Therapies (V&I) R&D unit at AstraZeneca. This exciting role will have overall leadership and accountability for virology, viral vaccines and viral antibodies research and discovery work through IND submissions.

This is an impactful, high-profile and visible role and requires an individual with outstanding scientific, communication and project management skills as well as the ability to build positive relationships with expert functions within AstraZeneca. In addition, the individual is expected to represent AstraZeneca at external meetings and develop collaborations with scientists in academia and the biotech industry.

You will have antibody and or vaccine R&D experience, demonstrated leadership, and be able to critically evaluate the science, data and competitive landscape that underlies the development strategy.

This position requires the ability to able to effectively communicate across a broad range of internal and external audiences, and have an ability to clearly articulate project specific strategies as they relate to the overall Early V&I portfolio and strategy.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

You will develop and implement strategy on new targets, technologies and drug/vaccine delivery programs, alongside the ability to integrate expertise/findings from discovery research, structural biology, nonclinical and clinical groups to develop programs from inception to the clinic. In addition, you will be required to support life cycle management for marketed vaccines and antibodies and play a pivotal role in search and evaluation of business development opportunities.

This role will lead a team of scientists identifying and developing novel antibodies and vaccines to prevent or treat a range of viral and diseases in the AstraZeneca portfolio.

Additionally, you will be responsible for providing scientific and technical support for regulatory communications, and must be able to travel a minimum of 10% overnight.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • MD or PhD in Virology, Immunology, or similar scientific area
  • 15+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience in discovering and developing vaccines, antibodies, antivirals or immunomodulators in research through early-stage clinical trials.
  • Experience leading cross-functional research and development teams.
  • Laboratory management and environmental and safety compliance
  • Outstanding record of contributions in drug, antibody, or vaccine development for viral diseases
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLPs) and good clinical practices (GCPs)
  • Have successful consultative, strategic planning and organizational skills working in a matrix environment.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to influence and build strong relationships with key external authorities in virology, vaccine development and immunology.
  • Demonstrated project leadership experience supporting the development of novel antibodies, vaccines and immunomodulators for the prevention and/or treatment of viral infections.
