Basic Function

LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB) is one of the world's largest plastics, chemical and refining companies and a member of the S&P 500, is seeking a Scientist to join our R&D Analytical team at the Cincinnati Technology Center (CTC) located in the Cincinnati, OH area. As a member of the team you will support the R&D Analytical Laboratory business needs. This position reports to the Analytical Lab Manager of the Cincinnati Technology Center. Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead HPLC and LC/Q-TOF analysis area to analyze samples submitted to the lab and consistently deliver high quality reliable results while meeting customer expectations and throughput goals.
  • Develop analysis in support of mechanical recycling of post-consumer waste plastic market development.
  • Develop quantitative analysis using HPLC with UV, CAD, and ELSD detectors.
  • Develop qualitative analysis and unknown identification using LC/Q-TOF.
  • Responsible for overseeing the receipt, preparation, and testing. Responsible for interpreting data and reporting statistics.
  • Responsible for developing the technical knowledge of research associates in the HPLC area.
  • Develop new methods as necessary in support of projects. Continuously improve current HPLC methods.
  • Exhibit excellent safety leadership in the workplace, consistent with company and site HSE goals.
  • Conduct analytical testing associated with assigned projects
  • Pursue technologies, instrumentation and knowledge to satisfy method development requests
  • Maintain all instruments in good working condition, including required routine calibration
  • Interface effectively with R&D managers, supervisors, researchers, other technicians, engineers, site HSE and other support staff for the planning and execution of efficient experimental programs with the highest attention to detail and data integrity
  • Engage in frequent developmental dialog with manager and others to continually enhance personal and group performance and development.
  • Focus on contributing a positive attitude, promoting positive work environment and high degree of teamwork
  • Contribute new innovative ideas to improve efficiencies and processes
  • Utilize analytical knowledge to solve problems specifically in the area of polymer characterizations
  • Provide technical leadership in HPLC and HPLC/MS analysis applied to polymers
  • Utilize different types of Analytical techniques as needed to analyze samples submitted to the lab and consistently deliver high-quality reliable results while meeting customer expectations and throughput goals
  • Responsible for receiving, preparing, testing, interpreting data, reporting statistics, entering and/or uploading to the LIMS
  • Develop new methods as necessary in support of projects
  • Conduct analytical testing associated with assigned projects
  • Maintain all instruments in good working condition, including required routine calibration
  • Interface effectively with R&D managers, supervisors, researchers, other technicians, engineers, site HSE and other support staff for the planning and execution of efficient experimental programs with the highest attention to detail and data integrity

Min. Qualifications

Education:
  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, Sustainability, Chemical engineering, Environmental, Bioanalytical, Physics, Material Science or a related technical discipline.
Work Experience:
  • A strong background in polymer HPLC analysis with at least 1-5 years industrial/academic experience related to polymers
Skills:
  • Demonstrated documentation and research skills
  • Highly self-motivated individual, focused on providing high quality laboratory data in an efficient manner, while exhibiting excellent workplace skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to make competent, independent, decisions in a timely manner to ensure excellent progress on projects and assigned tasks
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple and or changing priorities with minimal supervision
  • Must possess the ability to interact effectively and professionally with internal customers, external customers and vendors. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, supervisors and other employees.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills are required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with polymers (polyethylene and polypropylene) and relevant preparation techniques.
  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, Sustainability, Chemical engineering, Environmental, Bioanalytical, Physics, Material Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Background in polymers, sustainability or statistics would be beneficial.
  • Experience in broad range of analytical techniques is desirable
