Summary:

Under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, operates and maintains refrigeration systems, and heating ventilation and air conditioning systems as relates to the operation of the Facilities Department. Second shift / Evening, some flexibility with hours.

  • Primary responsibility to perform all duties associated with all refrigeration systems throughout the hospital. Refrigerants are under strict control of EPA regulations with particular focus on accidental release of chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC). Must establish and maintain appropriate refrigerant records to meet EPA requirements.
  • Responding to routine and emergency Heating /Cooling, Ventilation, Refrigeration and Facilities automation control service requests via on-line work order, radio dispatch or as assigned by Group Leader/Supervisor.
  • Establish an inventory of all devices and systems which contain refrigerants, creates and or maintains the preventive maintenance program to ensure appropriate periodic maintenance and monitoring. Perform all duties assigned to maintain, repair, troubleshoot and operate equipment.
  • Review all contracts with outside agencies which perform installation, removal and service work on refrigerant containing equipment. Ensure that contracted agent conforms to local, state and federal regulations.
  • Oversees the work of other HVAC team members with respect to refrigeration equipment as license and regulations allows.
  • Establishes and maintains safety precautions to mitigate hazards posed by newer refrigerants including toxic and flammable effects. Additionally, works with the safety department to ensure all materials axe registered in compliance with hazard communication requirements and participates in accidental hazardous materials release training and practices.
  • Performs all duties assigned to maintain, repair, troubleshoot and operate HVAC equipment, including but not limited to having proficient knowledge of air handler units, building automation systems, chillers, cooling towers, supply, return and exhaust fans, heat pumps, test and balance reports, pumps, ductwork termination units, steam and condensate systems.
  • Services and maintains the above equipment by greasing, oiling, adjusting controls, replacing drive belts, replacing or cleaning air filters, keeping refrigerant logs including recordkeeping and reporting requirements for stationary refrigeration, adjusting chemical treatments, repairing steam traps and valves. Prepares and installs new equipment as required.
  • Oversees and works with subcontractor to insure proper equipment repairs or installation of new equipment.
  • Assists other Facilities Department personnel as directed, provides guidance to those assigned to assist so that work is done promptly and efficiently.
  • Sets up and operates: power tools including but not limited to drills, screw gun, power washers, tube cleaning machine, refrigerant manifold gauges and band saw.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services in patient care areas and visitor areas who are of various ages and developmental skills. Recognizes the need to assess patient conditions either directly or with the assistance of patient care professionals which may prove to create anxiety or pose a risk and therefore, modify activities to reduce stress for the patient, visitor and staff. As an example, a patient in restraints usually pose a risk to his/herself or to others. The employee would seek advice regarding entry into the area, the risks posed, the controls necessary and alternatives for providing services.
  • A) Subject to be contacted anytime for emergencies. B) Respond to problems of all trades during off shift hours as required.


  • Qualifications
    Qualifications:
    • HVAC vocational school diploma or equivalent with particular training for HVAC systems.
    • HVAC Health care facilities experience is preferred.
    • The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
    • Knowledge of Facilities Automation system controls is preferred.
    • The ability to perform as a team member assisting all trades when required.
    • Commonwealth of Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License, US EPA Universal Certificate and Minimum two years similar experience required.
