Basic Function

As a member of our team, the Instrument Reliability Engineer will provide instrumentation and low voltage engineering support to a designated area of responsibility in the CHO Hydrocarbons areas. This includes leading reliability and plant performance improvements, expense and small capital projects, and supporting maintenance efforts to drive improvements in maintenance work processes, procedures, performance, and cost. Candidate will work closely with Process engineering, Operations, Turnaround, Capital Project, and Maintenance personnel in the execution of these duties.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Apply data analysis techniques to develop engineering solutions to repetitive failures and other problems that adversely affect plant operations including capacity, quality, cost, and regulatory compliance issues
  • Develop and optimize Preventive (PM) and Predictive (PdM) Maintenance Plans and associated maintenance procedures, guidelines or work instructions
  • Support development of Obsolescence and Long-Range Plans, which includes identification of Bad Actor equipment and development of mitigation plans (i.e. AMS Initiatives, SIS, PLCs, and governor systems, etc.)
  • Develop and forecast instrumentation spending plan in the annual Maintenance budget (i.e. MCI, RELU, EO)
  • Support Capital project organization in developing scope, participate in detailed design, factory acceptance tests and site acceptance tests/execution phases of projects
  • Enforce appropriate application of corporate, industry, and company standards and procedures
  • Support site outages and Turnarounds and develop Instrumentation scope
  • Lead or participate in interdisciplinary reliability improvement and/or Path to Excellence (P2E) Teams to guide efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, controls and safety systems
  • Provide technical support to crafts and operations on technical requirements and issues with unit instrument and low voltage electrical systems
  • Mentor engineering Co-op students and unit maintenance engineers
  • Create Management of Change documents and lead evaluations for Instrument Reliability initiatives
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technology, assessing applicability to improve reliability and performance, or to reduce maintenance cost
  • Participate and lead formal and informal incident investigations to properly identify and eliminate the root cause of incidents, complete and close findings
  • Manage risk to the achievement of an organization's strategic objectives in the areas of environmental health and safety, asset capability, quality, and production

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Instrumentation Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of Reliability and/or Maintenance engineering experience in the petrochemical or refinery industry
  • Good Knowledge of and work experience in SAP
  • Experience on various types of field instrumentation and control valves
  • Experience with developing PMs using best engineering practices
  • Experience with control system preferably in the following systems- DCS ( Delta V ), PLC - Allen Bradley, Tricoenx, package system, Machine condition & monitoring system - CSI, Bentley Nevada
  • Experience specifying field instrumentation and control valve sizing
  • Experience with data analysis, complex problem solving, and instrument troubleshooting
  • SIS certification is preferred
  • Basic proficiency in the following areas with the ability to develop additional skills in particular areas:
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (i.e. IEEE, ISA, IEC, NFPA, NEC)
  • Field Instrumentation and measurement technology
  • Root Cause Failure analysis
  • Various types of control valves
  • Reliability Engineering
  • Reliability data analysis
  • Ability to apply computer software tools (SAP, Microsoft Office,ExSILentia, Conval)
  • Ability to grasp Lyondellbasell Operational Excellence GAIS (FLOC, Asset Register, PM's PdM's, etc.)
