About the Position:

The Coordinator will have to acquire comprehensive knowledge of immigration regulations that govern visa requirements for international students. This position must advise international students, scholars, and staff members based on their depth knowledge of the code of federal regulations and the interpretation of vague rules as well as assess difficult cases, and provide solutions. As an Alternate Responsible Officer, the Coordinator reports to the Department of State and advises foreign research scholars, and professors on immigration regulations so they can remain in compliance while they are engaging in research and teaching activities. Must have knowledge on Department of Labor regulations and United States and Citizenship Immigration Services policies and practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the DSO and ARO for the F1 and J1 visa programs. Provide advisement (in-person, email, and telephone) to international students and scholars on regulatory issues including but not limited to: visa applications, maintaining status, on-campus and off-campus employment benefits, program extensions, reinstatements, and transfers. Advise students and scholars on university procedures and resources.
  • On-Campus Work Authorization - Advise students on on-campus employment criteria. Review and approve On-Campus Work Eligibility forms and sign Payroll Authorization Forms. Coordinate with various departmental representatives on what constitutes on-campus employment according to the U.S. government.
  • Reinstatements - Advise students on how to reinstate their visa status after they have violated their visa requirements. Advise students on the entire application process of reinstatement; determine reinstatement eligibility; help students assemble the application to mail to USCIS; provide documentation supporting the reinstatement recommendation and submit recommendation electronically in SEVIS.
  • Change of Statuses (COS) - Advise students on the criteria and eligibility for a change of status application with the United States Citizenship Immigration Services Office. Facilitate the application process by helping them assemble their application to mail to USCIS; provide documentation recommending the COS within the U.S in the form of an I-20. Ensuring all documentations are valid.
  • Assist the Assistant Director with the Social Security application process as well as the ITIN, and Driver's license for new students and scholars.
  • SMU Staff and Student Training - Assist the Senior Advisor in working closely with various campus constituents specifically admissions, enrollment services, and academic departments to ensure that international students and scholars fulfill their requirements and maintain their immigration status.
  • Help train new ISSS staff members on institutional policies and federal regulations pertaining to F/J students. Assist with recruiting and training of International Student Leaders.
  • Create and facilitate Canvas courses, workshops, and information seminars on immigration and compliance procedures. Assist with maintaining forms and keeping the ISSS website current.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent is required. An Associates or Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Professional experience working with international students or a diverse community is strongly preferred. Experience may include internships in an International Office. Experience at a four-year institution of higher education is preferred.

Knowledge of the code of federal regulations governing visa holders on F and J visa categories is preferred.

Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.

Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is required.

Experience with PeopleSoft, SharePoint, Canvas and working in SEVIS real time is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability interface well with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Must be customer oriented and able to assist students.

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability explain regulations clearly as well as train others.

Must have the ability to assess legal cases and provide solutions based on in-depth knowledge of immigration regulations and professional experience dealing with similar situations.

Candidate must possess strong organizational skills that include effective planning, time management and project management.

Must be detail oriented and highly accurate.

Candidate must demonstrate problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills.

Must be willing and able to occasionally work during the evening during programming events and some weekends during student orientation.
