About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Associate Director (AD) will be a career consultant for 100+ students across SMU's Full-time and MBA Direct programs. The role creates / delivers cutting-edge programming to enhance students' career search success, which are critical to the ranking and reputation of the Cox School of Business.

The AD will provide expert guidance in identifying potential careers and formulating compelling narratives delivered in written (resume / cover letter) and verbal (interview / elevator pitch) form. Throughout students' time in the program, their assigned AD will also help navigate tactical elements of the job search, such as informational interviews, career fairs, information sessions, on-site visits, and offer negotiation. This advising requires a strong business acumen and an in-depth understanding of the MBA recruiting environment. The role will also be active in assessing and yielding students through the Admissions committee.

Essential Functions:

  • One-on-one Coaching: Individually coach students in opportunity identification, personal branding, search strategies, resume composition, and behavioral / technical / case interviewing. Provide tailored, actionable feedback, based on experience with the business-school recruiting environment. Track student performance and use data to drive customized intervention strategies.
  • Career Coaching/Training (group/workshops): Design and execute cutting-edge career development workshops to develop / enhance performance in the career search (e.g., marketing or finance case interviewing). Combine personal experience with established CMC techniques to establish credibility with diverse, sophisticated audiences of MBAs that span a variety of backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Event Planning: Partner with CMC leadership and Operations team to plan and execute industry/function-specific events to connect employers/alumni with students. Ensure events are relevant to employers and students, adhere to organizational standards, and align with CMC strategic vision. Track participation of assigned student population, verifying engagement throughout the recruiting cycle.
  • Facilitating: Lead instruction of students enrolled in MBA courses (audiences of up to 150). Plan curriculum, prepare and deliver meaningful and current content, assess and evaluate student learning outcomes, and provide actionable feedback. Utilize relationships with employers / alumni to maintain relevancy with current market conditions for MBA recruiting.
  • Admissions Engagement: Interview, assess, and yield candidates for the programs as part of the full-time MBA Admissions Committee. Provide career-related insights during Admissions-related events (e.g., information sessions, sell-days). Support the creation of career-related content in marketing materials.
  • Analysis & Reporting: Collect, analyze, and report key qualitative and quantitative data on assigned student population. Identify trends and formulate data into insights and recommendations, advising CMC leadership on long-term strategic adjustments and near-term intervention action items.
  • External Relations: Engage employers during information sessions, career fairs, etc., gaining in-depth understanding of the companies' talent needs and identifying potential matches with student population. Support other departments (e.g., Admissions, Student Services) with career-related issues such as admissions interviews and student club (e.g., Finance, Consulting) engagement.
  • Mentor Program Management: oversee the operations of career-related mentor programs for full-time and MBA Direct programs (e.g., MBA Associate Board), including mentor onboarding, student matching processes, software management, and coordination with Alumni Relations team. Mentors are typically senior business leaders and / or distinguished alumni, requiring advanced communication and influencing skills.
  • May require evenings and occasional weekends to coach MBA students enrolled in evening programs and to support career-related events.
  • Requires occasional travel to conferences, workshops and treks.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Master's is required, preferably MBA or MS in business-related field.

A minimum of five years of professional experience in a business-related function (e.g. marketing, finance, real estate, consulting, HR/human capital, operations) or career-coaching function is required.

Previous career coaching and/or university recruiting experience (as a MBA student or as part of a firm's recruiting process) is also required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, coaching and verbal communication skills with the ability to manage and build relationships with a wide range of experience levels, including seasoned professionals, and students with diverse cultural backgrounds. A strong customer-service orientation and the ability to engage senior-level business executives is essential.

Candidate must also demonstrate a strong business acumen with the ability to effectively communicate business terminology in writing and coaching conversations. Must be self-directed with the ability to prioritize tasks and deal with ambiguity.

Candidates must have a strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet, and email communication systems. A working knowledge of social media tools is preferred.
