Job Summary & Responsibilities

The Plant Microbiology Supervisor is in charge of implementing Micro Control programs that ensure all production meets the requirements/specifications.

Develops and implements the site Micro Control Program in partnership with other functions (Operations & Engineering) in conformance to CP Standards and Guidelines. This position is ultimately responsible for Micro laboratory operations and testing.

Leads cross-functional continuous improvement efforts to enhance the site's micro performance. The ideal candidate is also responsible for the supervision and performance management of the microbiology laboratory staff. Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise the daily operations of the plant microbiology laboratory operations and staff.
  • Develop and implement a Manufacturing Micro Control plan that includes all areas of the Manufacturing Supply Chain such as raw materials, work in process (WIP), finished products, water systems, environmental monitoring, cleaning and sanitization (C&S) and control point monitoring (CPM) at the Facility.
  • Ensure all testing is performed according to corporate methods and policy and adheres to good microbiological practices. This includes the set up and administration of a laboratory quality assurance system that covers method and material qualification as well as equipment IQ/OQ/PQ, calibration & maintenance.
  • Understand and use basic laboratory safety equipment and instructions, precautions in handling and disposing of biological materials, in accordance with local environmental regulations.
  • Ensure that the reporting of data and maintenance of records is documented. Also, that the interpretation of the data is correct and that the results are effectively communicated to appropriate individuals, including management.
  • In partnership with Operations and Engineering, continuously improve the Micro Control systems based on the Cleaning and Sanitization standard and guidelines, using data from Micro Susceptibility Index and other analysis methods (Continuous Improvement Reviews, Micro Incident Reports, Root Cause Analysis) to identify new areas of concern and develop plans to address these areas.
  • Train & develop the laboratory staff using the principles of Coaching & Feedback as well as the Competency Development Map for Microbiology.
  • Develop & implement microbiology training for plant floor management and operators (i.e. Cleaning & Sanitization)
  • Participate in internal audits and external audits (contract manufacturers & labs, suppliers, etc.) Function as part of the Plant cGMP and Quality Team.
  • Supervises the validation program, conducts risk analysis, maintains and updates validation master plan, develops validation protocols for PQ, supports IQ/OQ in conjunction with the engineering/Operations team. Supervise Calibration program to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with Global & Divisional Quality/Microbiology teams to provide input on programs, procedures and methods, and receive guidance and support on implementation of programs.
  • This position reports to the Quality Manager.

Qualifications Required:

  • BS degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry or other related technical field
  • At least three years manufacturing experience (Oral Care, Personal Care, Pharmaceutical, Food, and Environmental). This experience should include working in a cGMP manufacturing environment both in a lab and with exposure to plant floor Micro Control programs
  • Proficiency using Lotus Notes, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekend coverage as needed Preferred:
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience in driving cGMP improvements to stay in sync with 21CFR Part 210 & 211 regulations. Key Competencies:
  • Engages Site, Division and Manufacturing and Technology Management as vital to provide appropriate leadership and resources to ensure full conformance to the Quality and Micro Control Standards.
  • Creates and furthers practical networks (with Supply Chain, Technology, Legal & Regulatory departments) that develop partnership and empowerment to strategically lead micro requirements
  • Provides direction for improving microbiological control in the entire site facility
  • Communicates information clearly, simply and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to apply continuous improvement tools to affect positive change (MSI, CPM, C&S, etc.)
  • Understands the linkages and interdependencies between and among supply chain and demand chain important metrics.
