OPERATING ROOM FACILITATOR

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Performs secretarial functions in the operating room suite. This position facilitates effective and efficient utilization of the operating room. Relates to a variety of personnel, receives and makes telephone calls, schedules cases, keeps alert of patient flow in relation to schedule. Position requires frequent contact and communication with others. Works under the direction of nursing personnel in assigned work area and is ultimately responsible to the Nursing Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinates the effective and efficient flow of a complex operating room schedule.

2. Assures that pre-op preparation and transportation of patients to and from area meets the tight deadlines of the operating room schedule.

3. Keeps nurses and physicians informed of the progress of the schedule, alerts them to actual or potential delays, and notifies them of expected time changes.

4. Alerts appropriate nursing and anesthesia staff to additions or changes to the schedule to ensure optimum utilization of operating rooms.

5. Acts as the central communications person of the Operating Room. This position is responsible for initiating or receiving all telephone messages to and from area.

6. Identifies visitors to the area and directs them to appropriate locations. and progress of case.

7. Responsible for maintaining a well stocked, clean and orderly work environment.

8. As requested, collects and prepares data relating to area activity using information contained in area log.

9. Keeps informed of policies and procedures for emergency situations which may occur (i.e., disaster).

10. Assists OR Nurses in maintaining computer input affecting the daily OR change for surgery and anesthesia

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Must be able to read, write and apply correct spelling , as well as perform simple math functions at a level generally acquired through a high school education.

2. Work requires effective utilization of recurring medical terminology. This will be at a level generally acquired through a 6-8 week job specific orientation.

3. Computer literate.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Must respond quickly and efficiently to all information received, notifying appropriate departments and personnel.

2. Mature behavior, able to remain calm in stressful area.

3. Must have ability to independently set priorities and organize work.

4. Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel.

5. Must have ability to adapt to changing pace within the OR because of frequent disruptions in daily schedule.

6. Must have organizational ability and demonstrate independent judgement within the scope of this position.

7. Must be detailed oriented.

8. Requires to work all shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

WORK CONDITIONS

1. Busy area with high stress atmosphere.

2. Area with some physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors and high noise level.

3. Work is underground with no windows or exposure to light
