Role Summary

The Platform Systems Engineer is responsible for the deployment and ongoing oversight of Shearman & Sterling's global network, security, storage and compute infrastructure assets. This individual will oversee the build and run services, ensuring that the final solutions are highly available. The Platform Systems Engineer will work closely with the ITSM, InfoSec, Applications Development, Program Management, Unified Communications and Data teams to ensure that the services are being delivered in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement global network, security, storage and compute projects and solutions. Develop technical designs, working closely with the system architecture teams. Direct and build complex projects while maintaining a close watch on deliverables.
  • Serve as the point of contact deploying and managing infrastructure projects and assets. Monitor the quality of project deliverables through client acceptance.
  • Work with Global Technology Solutions (GTS) leadership to develop capital/expense budgets and project resourcing schedules. Work with vendors, business unit directors and GTS leadership to order and evaluate hardware and software, and form alliances on projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements/conflicts and vendor contract clarification. Qualify third party vendors as appropriate.
  • Support operational run functions with full "run book ready" documentation, ensuring successful hand-over for long term operations management. Help identify and implement operational best practices.
  • Support "on call" duties on a 24 x 7 x 365 basis, working closely with the NOC teams to help remediate complex infrastructure operations issues as necessary. Responsible for break/fix for all infrastructure platforms.
  • Serve on the architecture and other planning committees as required. Implement design recommendations based on long-term IT organization strategy as developed by the architects. Support critical Disaster Recovery (DR) testing planning and testing.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:
  • Proven experience working on a cross-functional technology team.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Broad systems operations and engineering background, including: Multi factor authentication solutions, Cloud security, Endpoint security software products, VMware, Dell EMC Storage products, WAN & Lan solutions, Cisco Nexus, Routing, Switching, TCP/IP, High Availability, Checkpoint firewalls, Citrix Netscalers, Email Security Appliances, Airwatch Mobility, Unified Communications, video conferencing technologies.
  • Experience working with and managing third party vendors and consultant arrangements in support of projects.
  • Ability to develop and meet performance measures, which will consider: quality, complexity and quantity of projects supported, level of interaction with operations management teams, staff training programs, management reporting and development and adherence to capital budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technology issues and solutions to non-technical senior leaders and executives.


Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Security Engineering or related discipline is desired.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience working in an engineering/operations focused environment.
