If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. This position requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam within one year of employment.
Licensed Professional Engineer applicants will be hired at the Professional Engineer I level. Pay range for this classification is $29.716 - $43.805. Pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.
Applicants with a bachelor's degree in engineering will be hired at the Engineer level - $26.067.
Examples of Work
As a Bridge Design Engineer at the Nebraska Department of Transportation Bridge Division, you will be responsible for ensuring the technical accuracy of bridge designs. Your duties will center around the technical application of structural design resources, including AASHTO design specifications, NDOT bridge office policy and procedures manual, and fundamental structural engineering knowledge. This technical expertise will be applied towards the development of design calculation packages, detailed construction plans and 3D models, and advanced analytical design models. You will also be responsible for reviewing other engineer's calculations and plans to ensure technical accuracy.
The primary objective of your work as a Bridge Design Engineer is to ensure the timely and effective delivery of bridge design projects. To achieve this goal, you will be required to focus on effective project management and delivery. This will involve coordinating with project teams within the bridge division and collaborating with other engineering disciplines, such as hydrology and hydraulics, geotechnical, roadway, traffic, and others.
To provide effective design development, travel to bridge sites will be necessary to gather data. Additionally, during the construction of projects, it is often necessary to visit the site regularly to oversee progress and gain a better understanding of how to design bridges for improved constructability. By doing so, you will be able to identify and address any challenges that arise during construction, ensuring that projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
Professional Engineer I:
Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
Engineer:
Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam within one year of employment.
PREFERRED: Master's degree in Civil/Structural engineering. S.E. licensure. Four years minimum experience in bridge design or structural engineering.
OTHER: Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record or can provide authorized independent transportation and be available for occasional overnight travel.
