Job Summary:

The Honors & Scholars Program Specialist will help facilitate programming and events for the various programs within the offices of the Scholars' Den. These programs for undergraduate students include: the 4 year academic program, the University Honors Program; the 4-year President's and Hunt's Scholars programs; as well as the Hilltop Scholars and Rotunda Scholars programs.

In addition to programing and events for the individual programs, the specialist will organize and guide programming for the entire unit open to all students in the Honors & Scholars programs (approximately 1,000 students).

The person in this role should be a creative professional who enjoys working with students, and spending time with students, as he or she will be assisting us in building communities, engagement, and membership--as well as in fostering academic and leadership excellence.

Essential Functions:

  • Programming for individual Honors & Scholars groups, as well as for the entire Scholars' Den population (individual program programming as well as community-wide programming). This programming will be organized on a weekly/monthly/semester/annual cycle.
  • Work with continuing students online or in person (for those on campus), as well as with entering scholars over the summer, as they move toward and begin orientation. Activities, and discussions focused on the Scholars' Common Reading will be the primary work--although this could be adapted over time.
  • Administer the various Peer Mentoring programs within the Honors & Scholars groups--and bringing these programs into common processes and procedures, while maintaining each program's unique culture.
  • Data Collection: compile data that tracks and evaluates scholars' participation (and this participation's results in retention, community building, and academic success) in our programming.
  • Additional programming or duties as needed--determined by the Dean and program directors
  • With student programming, flexible schedule is required--sometimes this will mean evening and/or weekend hours.
  • Occasional travel may be needed for longer programming--such as the annual retreat for the President's and Hunt Leadership scholars, and possibly other programs.
  • Flexibility with hours with a later start to the day such as 10am to 6pm


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree is preferred.

A minimum of three years of work experience is required, preferably running a programming or working with students in a university setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to build relationships successfully with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Must also possess a strong focus on attention to detail. The ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to changing priorities is essential.

Candidate must possess strong problem solving skills with the ability to be resourceful, proactive and seek assistance as needed. Must also demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.

Candidate must have a strong technical aptitude with the ability to learn and apply new applications quickly. Candidate must demonstrate proficiency in MS Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel). A general understanding of software, and in managing, understanding, and employing data when relevant for program decisions is required.

Experience with PeopleSoft is preferred. Experience with Slate is desirable.

Experience using social media platforms in a professional role is a plus. Experience with graphic design and communication tools is desirable.
