Job Description
The Darling and Elmore Labs at Wellesley College are seeking a Research Assistant to participate in a National Institutes of Health funded study of antimicrobial peptides. This is a one-year position with the possibility of extension for an additional year. The position requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field. The ideal candidate will have previous experience utilizing techniques relevant to either experimental or computational aspects of the project. Relevant experimental techniques include confocal microscopy, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy and bacterial and eukaryotic cell culture, while computer modeling will focus on molecular dynamics simulations. Responsibilities will include designing and performing experiments, analyzing data, providing assistance in preparing conference presentations and manuscripts and training undergraduate research assistants. The position will also include responsibilities in general lab management, such as coordination of ordering and preparation of communal supplies. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with students and other staff members in a collaborative and diverse environment.

Position Responsibility

  • Performing research on antimicrobial peptides, including laboratory and/or computational work, data analysis and preparation of presentations and publications
  • Training of undergraduate research assistants
  • Laboratory management  
Basic Qualifications
  • BA, BS or equivalent degree.
Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with relevant experimental or computational methods from coursework and/or previous research experiences
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data
  • Ability to effectively communicate scientific ideas in oral and written form to a variety of audiences
  • Strong collaborative skills
  • Dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable work environment

  • This is a research position funded through an external grant from the National Institutes of Health.
