GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Charles and Ryan Lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases is seeking an intellectually curious and highly organized individual with international research experience to serve as a Research Program/Project Manager with a research focus related to evaluation of novel diagnostics and seroepidemiological tools for typhoid/paratyphoid fever and correlates and mechanisms of protective immunity for cholera and shigella. The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, alongside collaborators from many institutions across the globe. The team's research and international efforts are typically (but not exclusively) focused in Bangladesh and Nepal.

The Research Program and Project Manager will play a key role in research program administration, including supervision of research activities, training, and staff, in addition to managing a designated portfolio of individual projects and contributing to projects through vigorous bench work. The individual will have enough expertise to independently develop new laboratory protocols, and perform advanced analyses. Pay commensurate with experience, and opportunities for scientific recognition including authorship on peer reviewed publications, attendance and presentations at internationals meetings are other opportunities afforded by this position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

Laboratory Management/Investigation

  • Work with the PIs and research technician/assistants alike to manage the Charles and Ryan's lab research portfolio by orchestrating competing priorities, deadlines, and workload in a group with 7-10 ongoing research projects
  • Assist in financial oversight and use of laboratory funds
  • Supervise, coach, and develop research assistants/technicians, including:
    • Deliver new employee training
    • Provide daily oversight and direction,
    • Meet weekly with each research technicians/assistants
    • Lead annual performance review process
  • Carry out sophisticated laboratory projects independently
  • Develop new laboratory protocols
  • Contributes to presentation and manuscripts to share result
  • Participate in collaborative grant-writing projects
  • Keep team aware of research conferences and associated deadlines
  • Serve as the designated safety officer for the laboratory
  • Work with recruiting team to recruit a new research technician/assistant cohort each year, and potentially facilitate recruitment efforts at field sites by participating in job description development, posting employment opening advertisements in setting-appropriate channels, screening applicants, and interviewing selected candidates
  • Ensure research integrity, including data documentation and data management, by developing best practices, provide ongoing training, and monitoring for adherence

Research Project Management
  • Assist with coordination of administrative aspects of multiple active and pending projects
  • At project outset, clarify project goals, deliverables, tasks, timeline, and research team
  • Serve as a liaison between team members at various US and international collaborative research sites
  • Assist in coordination and monitoring of Institutional Review Board applications and reporting for international projects, including all applicable review dates and deadlines to prevent lapses in approval
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties will be carried out in a typical office/lab environment. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Occasional travel to international research sites may be required. There is also the opportunity to travel to scientific meetings to present research.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

The candidate will be responsible for providing daily supervision, guidance, and expertise for 2-3 Research Technician/Assistants.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Job qualifications include the following:
• Minimum of 7 years of laboratory experience is required (this is inclusive of applicable training for MA and PhD candidates).
• BA/BS required
• Ph.D or Master's degree in immunology, molecular biology, public health or related field preferred

• Rigorous research background
• Familiarity with immunology and molecular biology research, assessment of diagnostics, and ELISA-based assays.
