The Idris Lab at The Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT & Harvard is seeking a highly motivated full-time Research Technologist to assist various projects related to malaria biology and immunology. The hired candidate will play an integral role in helping to establish the newly formed Idris Lab. This is an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research that leverages lessons learned from naturally acquired immunity and parasite-host immune interactions, to guide vaccine and antibody development for malaria prevention. Current projects span functional genetics, antibody discovery, animal models and structural biology.

The successful candidate will be working collaboratively with multiple team members as well as independently to perform a broad range of assays for characterizing and evaluating antibodies as well as immune responses to immunogens. In addition, the candidate may be working with mosquitoes and malaria parasites in a preclinical mouse model for efficacy assessment of antibodies and vaccines. Prior experience with any of the following is highly desirable.

  • Preclinical malaria mouse model
  • Mosquito salivary gland dissection and sporozoite collection
  • In vivo imaging with an IVIS
  • Flow cytometry
  • Microscopy and Epifluorescence
  • Antibody and protein purification & characterization
  • Immunoassays such as ELISA and flow cytometry

The selected candidate will work closely with the PIs, administrative support at the Ragon, as well as other lab members, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, to ensure seamless research operations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon the lab's needs and the candidate's expertise. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.
  • Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. - pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.)
  • Maintains laboratory notebook with detailed experimental records
  • Understands and applies basic scientific techniques
  • Conducts analysis of results and may begin interpretation of results
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed
  • Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment
  • May perform independent literature searches
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
  • Maintains and orders supplies
  • Execute protocols of non-routine experiments
  • Assist the PI(s) with determining the most suitable methodology
  • Perform basic design and modification of protocols
  • Calculate, transcribe, and analyze data
  • Prepare and present reports
  • Organize and summarize acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques.
  • Organize and/or draft material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, and other documents for publication and/or presentation.
  • Participate in the design of experiments or field work.
  • Maintains detailed documentation of any experimental work and technical protocols
  • Ability to synthesize and interpret experimental results
  • Prepares written and/or verbal status reports, including powerpoint presentations
  • Uses statistical and graphic summaries
  • Orients and trains new Research Technicians, graduate students, and fellows

  • Proficiency and/or demonstrated ability to use Windows and Macintosh computers as well as common software platforms
  • Occasional weekend or evening flexibility may be required


Qualifications
EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree required.

EXPERIENCE:

Four years or more of laboratory experience is required. Prior experience in molecular biology, cell culture and animal handling is expected.
