We are seeking a Scientific Program Analyst to support the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities

  • Assign research, training and fellowship grant applications to approximately 80 program areas administered by program officers within the three Institute Divisions (DAIDS, DMID, DAIT).
  • Interpret research being proposed in the grant application, make assignment decisions and resolve conflicts.
  • Scientifically justify assignment decisions, especially in areas of conflict due to overlapping scientific interest between branches or programs.
  • Determine whether applications are appropriately assigned to NIAID.
  • Analyze and interpret scientific concepts and approaches of research, training, intramural and contract projects and select scientific codes for input into Science Coding and Reporting System (SCORS).
  • Evaluate NIAID research projects to:
    • Determine the relevancy of the research to Trans-NIH Special Reports and NIAID Special Interest Areas, such as cancer, nutrition, diabetes, behavioral research, prevention, data. science/bioinformatics, and health disparities research.
    • Determine the relevancy of the research project to the NIAID Clinical Trials definition.
    • Assign a clinical trial percentage based on an estimate of the percentage of the total project effort involved in the clinical trial.
    • Determine research projects involved in Vaccine, Drug /Therapeutics, Diagnostics, and Basic/Other areas.
    • Determine the percentage of human (clinical) versus non-human (non-clinical) experimentation.
    • Determine whether any of 28 Special Group Areas (gender and special populations) are involved in the research projects.
    • Determine a project's involvement in International Health Research.
  • Maintain the network SCORS database and assure the accuracy and completeness of the data.
  • Recommend changes/additions to the coding system to reflect new scientific directions, procedures, or programmatic emphasis.
  • Prepare ad hoc and annual NIAID internal reports on behalf of RPAB.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or the biological sciences.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience is required.
  • An infectious disease and/or immunology background is strongly encouraged. Research and bioinformatic experiences are pluses.
  • Laboratory experience in biological sciences (i.e., infectious disease and immunology) is required, experience in public health or health policy positions is not sufficient, looking for direct experience with infectious diseases or immunology.
