About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

SMU Libraries seeks a creative, forward-thinking librarian to develop and deliver research support and instructional services at Hamon Arts Library to vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs in art, art history, dance and fashion media. The successful candidate will establish relationships with students and faculty to grow and sustain information literacy initiatives and support the curriculum through collection development and research expertise.

SMU is a nationally ranked private research university in Dallas, TX, with eight degree-granting schools. SMU Libraries includes six libraries on the main campus and one library at our satellite location in Taos, NM.

Essential Functions:

• Provide information literacy instruction and consultation services to faculty and students in the visual arts and fashion media disciplines
• Represent liaison departments on the Teaching and Learning Team and the Arts and Humanities Collections Team
• Communicate with and advocate to liaison departments (art, art history, and fashion; others as needs arise)
• Provide general reference and chat service
• Assist library director and others with shared management of a gallery exhibition program

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

• ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; undergraduate degree in the visual arts (art history, studio arts, museum studies) or humanities discipline
• Three years' experience in a research library or museum library
• Three years' experience performing library instruction of research techniques and databases, collection development and public services in art-related subjects
• Strong knowledge of information literacy best practices

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree in art or humanities
• Experience with gallery and museum curatorial practices
• Familiarity with digital humanities projects incorporating data and data visualization, Omeka, spatial and mapping tools

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
