Job Title:Student Summer Assistant - Cuyahoga CountyDepartment:FAES | Cuyahoga County-JM

Responsibilities will be moderate and less routine and will require responsibility and good judgement. May coordinate activities for other student employees.Requires providing excellent customer service, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a professional environment.Requires previous experience and knowledge or skill in student assistant role.Represent the department and the university with the highest degree of integrity applying OSU mission and shared values.

This position is located in Cuyahoga County, Cleveland, Ohio.

The student position for the City of Cleveland Community Gardening Summer Sprout Project will work under the direct supervision of the County Area Leader and the Summer Sprout Program Coordinator with support from the Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Educator.

This position is responsible for scheduling and conducting site assessments at community gardens using pre-identified tools including soil probe, wheel measure, survey form, and personal or provided picture taking device; Communicating with garden leaders and the public primarily via phone and also email; Entering and maintaining accurate and complete records using multiple technologies, including Excel, Google Docs, Outlook, GMail, and personal or provided picture taking device; Managing paper files; Conducting soil tests utilizing soil probe as appropriate; Taking pictures of each garden during each site visit with personal or provided picture taking device; Providing basic technical assistance to community gardeners or referring gardeners to the ANR Educator; Assisting with planning and implementation of urban agriculture workshops and special events. Multiple site visits will be conducted each day. Soil probe and other equipment must be transported with student in personal
vehicle.


Eligible candidates must be enrolled as a college student on a full-time or part-time basis in an academic program relevant to the position; Experience operating personal computer and other office equipment; An Ohio driver's license and personal transportation is required to travel to and from garden sites to conduct assessments.


Preferred candidates will possess basic knowledge of Greater Cleveland's infrastructure and culture; have experience working in an urban setting and with a variety of community agencies (schools, nonprofit agencies, city/county departments, faith-based partners, community development corporations, etc.); Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills; Ability to use Microsoft Teams and Zoom; Demonstrate an eagerness and enthusiasm to support the educational needs of citizens of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities; Ability to work independently while accomplishing tasks within timelines and according to a planned scope of work; Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Hours are flexible. This position can work up to 28 hours if taking classes and up to 38 hours during the summer and/or academic breaks.
