Purpose:

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit Catholic University located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, seeks a structural engineering tenure-track faculty member at the assistant professor level to begin in Fall 2022. SCU embraces a teaching-scholar model for its full-time faculty and as a result there is an emphasis on both exceptional teaching and strong research.

We welcome candidates whose experiences and background have prepared them to contribute to our mission to educate citizens and leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion, and cultivate knowledge to build a more humane, just, and sustainable world. In addition, we encourage applications from candidates who will contribute to the diversity of our community, including women and underrepresented minorities.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have responsibility for teaching structural engineering courses (lectures and labs) in materials, mechanics, analysis, and design at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Graduate level courses will include performance-based engineering (seismic emphasis) and advanced numerical modelling. In addition to teaching, the candidate will be expected to develop an active and independent research program, and involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research. Faculty are also expected to engage in University, professional, and/or community service.

Additional Information:

SCU and the Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering Department are committed to social justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion of all people. We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service aspirations align with our commitment to these ideals; whose experiences will enrich the department, School, University, and society; and who will serve as a strong role model and advocate for a diverse student population.

In the Fall of 2021 the School of Engineering and many science departments moved into the new 300,000 square foot Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation (SCDI) that houses classrooms, laboratories, and learning spaces that facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. SCU has a strong commitment to humanitarian engineering, including the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship and the Frugal Innovation Hub, which offer opportunities for engagement with the local community and global partners. SCU faculty often work with other researchers at neighboring educational institutions, governmental laboratories and agencies, non-profit institutions, and private companies.
