Visiting Assistant Professor of Engineering - Multiple Areas
Location: Swarthmore, Pennsylvania
Open Date: Nov 29, 2023
Description

The Department of Engineering at Swarthmore College invites applications for multiple Visiting Assistant Professor positions beginning in the Fall 2024 semester. We are searching for faculty specializing in Computer, Electrical, or Environmental Engineering who are prepared to teach high-achieving undergraduates of diverse backgrounds in existing courses such as Computer Architecture, Mobile Robotics, Electronic Circuit Applications, or Water Quality and Pollution Control.

Swarthmore's Department of Engineering provides an ABET-accredited general Engineering major, with faculty distributed across the subfields listed above plus Mechanical and Civil Engineering, as well as a growing cross-cutting focus on Biomedical Engineering. All courses that count for our major have an attached laboratory component. Like the College at large, we value academic rigor and place a strong emphasis on undergraduate research. The department is housed in a brand-new science building, and research support is available through both departmental funds and internal college College grants. Student stipends for summer research are also available. Additional information about the department is available at https://www.swarthmore.edu/engineering/.

Located in the suburbs of Philadelphia and near Wilmington DE, Swarthmore College is a highly selective liberal arts college whose mission combines academic rigor with social responsibility. Swarthmore has a strong institutional commitment to diversity, and actively seeks and welcomes applications from candidates with exceptional qualifications, particularly those with demonstrable commitments to a more inclusive society and world. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information on Faculty Diversity and Excellence at Swarthmore, see http://www.swarthmore.edu/faculty-diversity-excellence/information-candidates-new-faculty.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed their PhD by January 2025. Interest in undergraduate teaching is crucial, and previous teaching/TAing experience is highly valued. We will give preference to: candidates whose teaching addresses either engineering design methodology or social impacts of engineering; and to candidates who are interested in mentoring undergraduate summer researchers at Swarthmore.

The strongest candidates will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to creative teaching and an active research program that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.

Application Instructions

Please submit a cover letter that addresses the qualifications mentioned above, an up-to-date CV, and contact information (names, emails, and phone numbers) of three references. Referrers will be contacted after a successful first-round interview. We will begin reviewing applications on February 15, 2024 and continue until available positions are filled. Apply via Interfolio: apply.interfolio.com/136886.

Feel free to address any questions to Matt Zucker, Associate Professor and Department Chair (mzucker1@swarthmore.edu).
